- **Security firm demonstrates a WeChat voice call that takes over an account before it is answered** — Security firm Calif published a proof of concept demonstration it calls WeWorm, in which one WeChat voice call takes over the account it rings with no action from the recipient. The call has to come from someone already in the target's WeChat contacts. The malicious data enters WeChat's processing path while the phone is still ringing, so answering does not stop the attack, and declining ends only that attempt, leaving the attacker free to call again later. An attacker who gets through can read message history and send messages in the user's name, though not take control of the phone itself. A compromised account then calls the next contact and breaks into it the same way, a chain the researchers demonstrated across three phones running Android and iOS. Calif says its AI found the vulnerability in July, with researchers building the exploit by hand. Tencent shipped WeChat 8.0.77 on Android and 8.0.76 on iOS on Aug. 21, and Calif confirmed on Aug. 28 that the exploit is blocked on Tencent's servers for all users.
